Quality, Safety, and Research

Since the founding of MANI Bläuel, we have been working according to strict quality standards and pay attention to ecological and social aspects in dealing with our employees, suppliers, and the environment. As in all other areas, the measurement and testing methods in olive oil production are constantly being improved. This allows substances to be detected today that were barely known a few years ago. Thus, for some time now, MOSH and MOAH have also been detected in foods. (An overview of what exactly MOSH and MOAH are can be found in this Recommendation of the EU Commission.) Since 2016, we at MANI Bläuel have taken comprehensive measures to minimize possible sources of contamination.

Mineral Oil Contamination in Food

As mentioned at the beginning, it has only been possible for a few years to detect these complex contaminants in food. The complexity of this issue is widely discussed. However, it is clear that in a mineral oil-based economy, such entries can never be completely excluded. The German Food Association (Lebensmittelverband) also emphasizes in its 2020 report: "Despite optimized manufacturing and packaging practices, levels of mineral oil-like hydrocarbons cannot be completely avoided." The guidelines published by the Food Association also serve as an orientation for us.

In November 2021, Stiftung Warentest published a test on various olive oils—including an olive oil from MANI—and also addressed the issue of contaminants. MOSH was detected in almost all tested oils, in varying amounts. However, Stiftung Warentest emphasized: "No one needs to worry about low levels."

Continuous Improvement & Research at MANI Bläuel

In 2016 and 2017, we conducted a comprehensive scientific study in collaboration with the University of Udine. All possible sources of contamination in our cultivation areas and the entire supply chain were examined. An excerpt from this research project was published in the Italian scientific journal OLI E GRASSI.

The results of this study helped us further optimize our processes. Thus, we can guarantee in our own production facility that no contamination occurs. Nevertheless, we constantly strive to further minimize the burdens.

Our Commitment Continues

Even though we have taken the right measures and the contamination has decreased significantly, our work does not stop. Here are some of our continuous measures:

  • Control of every single batch of olive oil
  • Further investments to identify any remaining possible sources of contamination
  • Diversification of suppliers
  • Information campaigns for suppliers
  • Collaboration with local and international laboratories to further develop measurement methods
  • Regular staff training, especially in quality control and purchasing
  • Regular exchange with experts to stay informed about the latest developments
